Zinc, which plays a significant role in cell production and protein synthesis, is also important for the proper function of the immune system, i.e. fighting off infections and healing injuries. It also contributes to the strength of muscles and bones. Zinc deficiency may reduce one’s sense of alertness, along with the sense of smell and taste, and cause loss of hair and appetite. It may also lead to unhealed wounds, diarrhea and even hypogonadism, or a diminished production of sex hormones by gonalds (testes or ovaries).


Magnesium, along with zinc, participates in maintaining sex drive and reproduction potential, especially in men, by maintaining the proper testosterone level. It also takes part in the creation and repair of DNA. By increasing the amount of water in the intestines magnesium citrate works as a laxative during occasional constipation. Furthermore, magnesium is involved in generating energy, in the contraction and relaxation of muscles, and in the regulation of the nervous system. When the demand for energy is high, e.g. when there is a shortage of oxygen during strength, speed and power (anaerobic) exercises, glucose is oxidized to pyruvate in a process called glycolysis, which produces lactate, which can be oxidized back to produce pyruvate by, among others, muscle and brain cells. This is significant, as pyruvate serves as fuel for the Krebs cycle. Glycolysis creates high-energy adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecules, pyruvate and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). Thus, ATP, required as a source of energy for muscular activity, is obtained from the breakdown of glycogen in muscles. On the other hand, in the Cori cycle lactate is converted to glucose in the liver while glucose returns to the muscles, where it is metabolized back to lactate. Although, despite what many assume, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is not caused by lactate, but rather by minor muscle damage, lactate causes pain during intensive exercises. Based on current clinical studies on animals there are some indications that it is not glucose but lactate, metabolized by neurons in the brain, that is the main energy source for living tissue. Complementary help in the recovery process is provided by vitamin B6, which further reduces tiredness and fatigue. Pyridoxine plays an important role in the metabolism of protein and glucose and in the production of hemoglobin (the red blood cell component that carries oxygen), thus improving the transport of oxygen.
