Zinc, which plays a significant role in cell production and protein synthesis, is also important for the proper function of the immune system, i.e. fighting off infections and healing injuries. Although, despite what many assume, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is not caused by lactate, but rather by minor muscle damage, lactate causes pain during intensive exercises. Based on current clinical studies on animals there are some indications that it is not glucose but lactate, metabolized by neurons in the brain, that is the main energy source for living tissue. Complementary help in the recovery process is provided by vitamin B6, which further reduces tiredness and fatigue. Pyridoxine plays an important role in the metabolism of protein and glucose and in the production of hemoglobin (the red blood cell component that carries oxygen), thus improving the transport of oxygen.
